Satan Is Defeated

Satan Is Defeated

Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you (Luke 10:19).

As one who is born again, not only has Jesus given you power and authority to cast satan out, He also made you superior to him and all his demons. The resurrection of Jesus made a champion of you. The Bible says you were raised up together, and made to sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6). You’re seated with Christ, far above all principality and power, so you’re superior to them! God has already done everything He needs to do about the devil; it’s now your responsibility to resist him and put him to flight.

The Bible says when you resist the devil he’ll flee from you terrified (James 4:7). He is programmed to flee when you resist him, and you resist him by maintaining your confessions of God’s Word. You need to know that the devil is already a defeated foe; it’s your responsibility to stall his maneuvers and manipulations in and around you. Perhaps he may have afflicted someone close to you, maybe a loved one; but you can declare today, in the Name of Jesus, that he takes his filthy hands off that loved one. Don’t pray, “O God please stop the devil!” No. You're the one to run satan out of your home.

Vain religion says “O God, don’t let the devil come after me!” But when you know who you are in Christ, you say “I’m not going to let the devil have a foothold in my life!”

“I’m not going to let the devil have my son, or daughter; I’m not going to allow his manipulations around me!” Remember, God has given you the authority to keep the devil where he belongs – under your feet.

Confession
I have dominion over sin, sickness and circumstances. I’m superior to satan, and I’ve overcome the world. I am seated together with Christ in the heavenly realms, far above all principality and power! I exercise the authority of Christ in and around my sphere of contact in Jesus’ Name!

How To Conquer Fear And Anxiety

How To Conquer Fear And Anxiety

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God (Philippians 4:6).

The Word of God tells us to be anxious for nothing; that means to have no anxiety about anything. Rather, in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving you should make your requests known to God. The result of this is that the peace of God which surpasses all understanding shall garrison your heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).

Also, the Bible is replete with the admonition for us not to fear. Now if we couldn’t stay without having fear and anxiety the scriptures wouldn’t tell us not to fear or to refuse anxiety. God knows you could live without anxiety, panic-attacks and fear, that’s why He said for you not to fear or be anxious. He only tells you to do what you have the capacity to do.

So in conquering fear and anxiety you’ve got to have faith in God’s Word. Your heart must be stable in prayer and supplication with thanksgiving as you express your faith towards God. Fear is actually faith in the ability of the adversary to hurt you; faith in the ability of all that is negative to stand against you and defeat you! Thus to conquer it you have to have faith in the positives: faith in God’s Word, faith in His love for you, faith in His grace, power and ability to put you over in life!

The knowledge of God’s Word is the beginning of your deliverance from fear and anxiety. You can’t have faith in God’s Word if you don’t know the Word. Your faith grows with the knowledge of the Word. As faith is stirred in your spirit, fear is dispelled. Jesus said in John 8:32: “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” God’s Word is the truth that delivers you from fear.

So it doesn’t matter in which area fear tries to attack you, refuse to fret! Find out the truth from God’s Word concerning the situation and stay your mind on that truth, refusing to be moved by any contrary or negative information.

Prayer
Dear Father, I thank you for your Word in my spirit today stirs faith and dispels fear and anxiety in Jesus Name. I refuse panic-attacks and reject every thought of worry and anxiety for I know that my faith in your Word and in your mighty power, love and grace is my victory over the devil and the powers of darkness. Amen.

Pray For God’s People Experiencing Persecutions

Pray For God’s People Experiencing Persecutions

Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body (Hebrews 13:3).

In Acts 12, the disciples of Jesus found themselves in a predicament: Herod had seized James and killed him. When he discovered that this pleased the Jews, he went further and apprehended Peter. The Church had by this time realized that if they didn’t intercede for Peter, he would suffer the same fate as James. Consequently, the Bible says “…prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him (Peter).”

Whilst they were praying, Peter was rescued miraculously from prison by an angel of the Lord. Thank God they had learnt their lesson; albeit, at a high cost.

It’s important that we intercede for our fellow brothers and sisters who are experiencing persecutions. Sadly however, some believers only come together to talk about how bad things have gone and all the evil happening in the world. They shut their eyes to the problems other believers are facing. I tell people that there are no casual visits. Every time you have the opportunity to be with another believer, don’t spend all the time on trivial or irrelevant discussions; take some time to join your hands together in intercession for the brethren in the Church.

Don’t be lazy in praying for other believers around the world and interceding for men everywhere. Be actively involved in this; and the good things you make happen for others, God will make happen for you.

Prayer
Dear Father, thank you for making the souls of men all over the world beautiful to me. I thank you for stirring in me the spirit of intercession, and today, I make power available for salvation, healing, restoration and protection for my brothers and sisters in Christ, all over the world, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Edifying Communication

Edifying Communication

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers (Ephesians 4:29).

In very instructive and categorical terms, the Spirit of God, through the Apostle Paul admonishes us not to engage in unwholesome or corrupt communication. Rather, the words that proceed out of your lips should be words that’ll render healing to a broken heart, courage to the discouraged, and comfort to the afflicted.

The Bible lets us know that a perfect man is one who doesn’t offend in word (James 3:2). His words are consistent with God’s Word. When he speaks, his hearers are blessed, uplifted and edified. That’s because his words are seasoned with grace.

Some people are so used to criticizing instead of blessing and praying for them. Make a deliberate decision to keep away from destructive criticisms. Let your words be kind and affectionate. Refuse to have itching ears for gossips, and don’t company with those who are fond of discussing the affairs of others: “And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not” (1 Timothy 5:13).

Thus as a Christian, choose to communicate like your heavenly Father. Let your words concerning people be graceful, inspiring, motivating and encouraging.

Confession
God has given me the tongue of the learned; therefore I know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary. I consciously speak only words that minister grace and edify the hearer. I refuse to engage in any unwholesome or defaming communication; through the help of the Spirit, my words are inspiring, motivating, encouraging and always full of grace!

Absolute Victory In Christ!

Absolute Victory In Christ!

And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; (Luke 1:69-71).

One beautiful thing about the salvation we have in Christ is that we have absolute victory over the enemy and can serve God without fear. We’ve been delivered from the powers of darkness and translated into the glorious Kingdom of God’s dear Son, who leads us in the paths of righteousness and in the triumphal excursions of life. Thus in Christ, your life is a victory parade. It doesn’t matter who stands against you or makes a decree against you; it doesn’t matter what they say about you or against you, you have absolute victory in Christ.

The latter part of our opening scripture says “That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us.” This is God’s decree concerning you and it came into force with the coming of the Lord. It means whoever declares himself your enemy; whoever may hate you, or plan evil against you, will never be able to overpower you, for Christ is your victory. Therefore never be bothered about adversaries. You don’t even have to pray against them, for the Bible says “When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell” (Psalm 27:2).

Notice the scripture above didn’t say, pray against the wicked or your enemies from coming against you; they are free to come against you. But their end has been determined: they’ll stumble and fall. There’re Christians who sometimes allow themselves to be overwhelmed by the perceived activities of some imaginary enemies. I would to God they’d learn to take the Lord simply at His Word! He says in Luke 10:19 “and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” There’s absolutely no justification for a Christian to live or respond to any circumstance out of fear. Refuse to be afraid of anything or anyone.

Your victory in Christ over satan and the powers of darkness is absolute. Luke 10:19 says “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Let this inspire faith in you today, as you meditate on the victory Jesus obtained for you through His death, burial and resurrection.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I give you thanks for your Word has given me understanding and knowledge of my victory in Christ Jesus over satan and the powers of darkness. I’m so glad I can live to serve you free from fear of the devil and the wickedness in this world! I go out today knowing that no evil shall befall me and I’m delivered from wicked and unreasonable men, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Renew Your Thinking With The Word!

Renew Your Thinking With The Word!

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind … (Romans 12:2).

Your spirit is recreated when you’re born again, making you a brand new person – a new species of being without a past (2 Corinthians 5:17). However, though your spirit is born anew you may still find unwholesome thoughts coming to your mind. This is because your mind isn’t renewed just yet. It’s your responsibility to renew your mind – your thinking – with the Word of God.

Someone rightly said you may not be able to prevent a bird from flying over your head, but you certainly can prevent it from roosting on it. Though some negative thoughts and ideas you used to have before you were born again may still occasionally come to your mind you must refuse to dwell on them. Thoughts of weakness, wickedness, sickness and sin may dominate your thinking if your mind is not renewed by the Word. To overcome this, you’ll have to renew your thinking with the Word; you’ll have to meditate on the Word daily. Feed your spirit and mind with the Word.

When your mind is renewed with the Word, you’ll think on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous, excellent and praiseworthy: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. (Philippians 4:8). This is a call to think on the Word, for nothing can be more excellent and praiseworthy true, honest, just, pure, lovely and of good report that the Word of God.

So determine to meditate on the Word, not just today, but everyday. Through meditation, the Word goes through your mind into your spirit, and your thinking is renewed. The Bible says as a man thinks in his heart so he (Proverbs 23:7).Your life will always go in the direction of your thinking, because your thinking is what inspires your talking, which in turn engineers your actions. Thus, when your thinking is renewed with the Word your mindset will be transformed and you will walk in God’s will and purpose for your life.

Confession
As I meditate on the Word today, my mind is renewed, and my mindset is transformed to think victory, health, success, prosperity and success only! I’m constantly being changed into the image of Him that created me, through the knowledge of Christ, and His Word that fills my heart! Amen.

Look Inside

Look Inside

Weary not yourself to be rich; cease from your own [human] wisdom (Proverbs 23:4 AMP).

Some people believe the reason they’re suffering or poor is because of the kind of work they do. That’s not true! The problem isn’t in the kind of work they do; rather it’s in their minds. Many of them think their success in life is hinged on making money through hard work, so they struggle and struggle till they get frustrated.

When I was much younger, I knew I would never be poor. Not just because of what I knew from the Word of God, but because there were three things I had learnt to do properly: I could shine shoes, wash cars, and sew clothes. I remember when I started sewing; my dad had just given me a shirt which was way bigger than my actual size. So I had to amend it to be able to wear it, and I did, using my mum’s sewing machine. Of course, it looked funny by the time I was through, but I achieved something! I saw abilities within me.

As time went on, I learnt how to cut properly and I got better until I became convinced that if I had to be a tailor, I would be the best. You have the capacity for great creative ideas; therefore look inside for them. Those ideas, if properly harnessed, are more valuable than money. If you nurse your ideas long enough and discipline yourself in their direction, you’ll become very good at what you do after a while and money will eventually come to you, for money is a slave of ideas.

Your success, prosperity and greatness are not determined by your geographical location or by the economy of the nation where you function. Rather, your mind is what determines what you become, for with your mind you can change everything else. You can change the state of your nation and the economy; you can change anything if only you’ll have the right thoughts in your mind.

Prayer
Dear Father, I thank you for giving me a creative mind from which inspiring ideas are born. As I discipline myself in the direction of my God-given ideas today, my skills are improved and I get better at what I do, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Pray For Peace In Our Cities!

Pray For Peace In Our Cities!

…The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working] (James 5:16 AMP).

From our opening scripture, it’s evident that you can change anything through prayer, because the divine power necessary to cause that change is in you; it was deposited in you the moment you received the Holy Spirit into your life: “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you…” (Acts 1:8) Through prayer, we can activate the power of God and effect changes in the realm of the Spirit. We can bring that power to bear on situations and circumstances we want changed.

For example, we can put a stop the recurrent spate of wars, natural disasters and violence that result in wanton destruction of lives and property as experienced in many parts of the world today. Through our effectual, fervent prayers, we can implant lasting peace in war-torn, disaster-ravaged and terrorism-prone countries in our world. We’ve been mandated to do this: “And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the Lord for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace” (Jeremiah 29:7).

Consequently, the onus is on us to seek the peace of our cities. We’re to pray to the Lord for it. You should pray today, and for as long as it takes for peace to mantle the nations of the earth and rule the hearts of men all over the world. Pray fervently in other tongues and declare that God’s angels of peace are released into every hitherto troubled region in the earth, to cause the peace of God to garrison the hearts of men and women domiciled therein.

With authoritative words, rebuke satanic forces and break the stronghold of evil, wickedness and violence over the Middle East and Gulf Region. Declare that satan’s dominion over Europe, Asia, the Americas and other parts of the world, and his desire to foment and insight nations to war is broken! Affirm that his manipulative tendencies to lure men into acts of terrorism are thwarted.

Set yourself to pray like this often – earnestly, fervently, passionately and intensely for peace on earth, and there’ll surely be greater peace and prosperity all over the globe.

Prayer
Dear Father, your Word reveals Christ as the only hope for peace in the earth, for His birth brought peace on earth and goodwill to all men. I pray for the impact and greater influence of that peace in the hearts of men today, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Let Others Benefit From Your Prosperity!

Let Others Benefit From Your Prosperity!

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work (2 Corinthians 9:8).

There’re different levels of prosperity at which God’s people function. Some are in the first level, where they have just enough to get by. Some however are on the next level where they have more than enough to take care of themselves, their family and a few others. Then, there’re those who are in the arena of abundance, where they can do so much for themselves and for many others.

However, God’s desire for you is that you move from the realm of abundance into the realm of super-abundance, where you’re financially strong enough to do whatever you want to do that’s good for God and for people, whenever you want to do it, however you want to do it! This is the level of prosperity you should strive to function in; where you’re able to help others. Our world needs more of such men and women today; who are willing and able to bring succour and relief to the less-privileged amongst us.

There’re many orphans, widows, and other needy people that could benefit from your prosperity. The Bible says in Proverbs 19:17 “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.” Also, the Bible says the generous man is blessed for giving to the poor (Proverbs 22:9). Our opening scripture describes God’s commitment to you, when you dedicate yourself to a lifestyle of giving; He (God) “…is able to make all grace (every favor and earthly blessing) come to you in abundance, so that you may always and under all circumstances and whatever the need, be self-sufficient [possessing enough to require no aid or support and furnished in abundance for every good work and charitable donation]” (2 Corinthians 8:9 Amp).

God’s resources are limitless; His wealth is infinite. As His kids, we’re His heirs; all that He has belongs to us. Therefore choose to function at the level of super-abundance. The way to press into this realm of prosperity is through giving: “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom…” (Luke 6:38). Through giving, you multiply riches and wealth. Keep looking out for opportunities to be a blessing to others, and the Spirit of God, apart from helping you increase your capacity to give more, will cause you to dwell in the realm of super-abundance, where others will benefit from your prosperity.

Suffering Is Unnecessary

Suffering Is Unnecessary

For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world (Hebrews 4:3).

Everything required for your success has already been provided by God. The works were finished from the foundation of the world. Now, when the Bible says the works were finished from the foundation of the world, as in the scripture above, it means you don’t have to struggle in life, for everything concerning your success, health and prosperity has been taken care of. You’ve entered God’s rest; you’re not called to suffer defeat in life.

You don’t have to be defeated or give up hope. You don’t have to struggle for anything. Everything you need for success and prosperity has been made available: “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us unto glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:3).

For the Christian, suffering is absolutely unnecessary. If you’d pay attention to God’s Word, and make certain to do what He says, you’d live a fulfilled life. Believe and receive this truth today with faith. You’ve been established on the path of success and victory. God did it ever before you came on the scene. He made you a success and ordained your prosperity before you were born. Nothing in this life is too good for you, for you’re the seed of Abraham, called to a life of power, glory and virtue.

Prayer
Dear Lord and Father, I praise you and rejoice at your Word that has made me realize your eternal plans of success, prosperity, progress and victory for my life. I’m grateful to know that you’ve already ordained me to a life of victory and triumph, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Work To “Make A Giving,” Not A Living

Work To “Make A Giving,” Not A Living

Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with this hands the things which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth (Ephesians 4:28).

There’re many who believe the reason they should work is so they can make ends meet, or earn a living. But that’s not what the Word of God teaches. Our opening scripture reveals that the reason you ought to work is so you would have to give; you work to “make a giving,” not a living. Some people live as though the Bible says “My God shall supply all your needs according to how much you’re paid at your place of work.” You need to look to the Lord as your source of income and livelihood, and not to your job. He supplies all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).

Natural circumstances may try to force you to believe that your job or business is the only means by which you can receive money, but refuse to let such a thought rule your life. The Bible didn’t say “Work, that you may have money”; rather, it says, “Work that you may have to give.” Your job is a medium or channel through which you bless others and in so doing, you also are rewarded.

Giving is God’s established medium to prosper you financially. Therefore, it doesn’t matter how much you’re paid at your job or business, never take it as your source of income. This doesn’t in anyway mean that you handle your job with levity. Do your job with excellence and shun mediocrity, and the Lord will promote you.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I recognize you as my source of wealth and prosperity. I rejoice to know that I can always rely on you to supply all my needs according to your riches in glory by Christ Jesus! I look up to you today, and always for my promotion and prosperity. Amen.

On 13 January 2010, a federal court handed him the power to carry out state affairs while President Umaru Yar'Adua received medical treatment in a Saudi Arabian hospital. A motion from the Nigerian Senate on 9 February 2010 confirmed these powers to act as President. On 24 February 2010 Yar'Adua returned to Nigeria, but Jonathan continued as acting president.[2] Upon Yar'Adua's death on 5 May 2010, Jonathan succeeded to the Presidency, taking the oath of office on 6 May 2010.

[edit] Early life, education and personal life

Jonathan was born in Otueke in Ogbia Local Government Area of the then Eastern Region, later Rivers State, now Bayelsa State to a family of canoe makers.[1][3] He holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Zoology in which he attained Second Class Honours, Upper Division. He also holds an M.Sc. in Hydrobiology/Fisheries biology, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Zoology from the University of Port Harcourt. After obtaining his degree, he worked as an education inspector, lecturer, and environmental-protection officer, until he decided to enter politics in 1998.[4]

Jonathan is married to Patience Faka Jonathan and has two children.[5] Jonathan is a member of the Ijaw ethnic group.[6]
[edit] Early political career
[edit] Bayelsa State governorship

Jonathan began his career in politics in 1998, having joined the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in 1998.[3] Jonathan, previously the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, succeeded Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, who was impeached by the Bayelsa State Assembly after being charged with money laundering in the United Kingdom. In September 2006, Jonathan's wife was indicted by the nation's anti-crime agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), for money laundering related offences.[7]
[edit] Presidential race

In December 2006, Jonathan was selected as running mate to Umaru Yar'Adua for the ruling PDP presidential ticket in the April 2007 election.[8] On 20 April 2007, shortly before the presidential election, a militant attack that was described by police as an assassination attempt against Jonathan occurred in Bayelsa State.[9]
[edit] Vice Presidency

Following the PDP's disputed electoral victory, militants blew up Jonathan's country house in Otu-Eke, Bayelsa State on 16 May; two policemen were killed in the attack. Jonathan was not present at the time.[10] After taking office, Yar'Adua publicly declared his assets, and on 8 August 2007, Jonathan also did so.[11][12] According to Jonathan, as of 30 May 2007 he had a total of 295,304,420 naira ($8,569,662.40) in assets.[12]
[edit] Acting President
Jonathan meets U.S. President Barack Obama at the Nuclear Security Summit in the US in April 2010

President Umaru Yar'Adua left Nigeria on 23 November 2009 for medical treatment. He did not provide for anyone to assume his duties. On 13 January 2010, a federal court handed Vice-President Jonathan the power to carry out state affairs in the president's continued absence. On 22 January 2010, the Supreme Court of Nigeria ruled that the Federal Executive Council(FEC)had 14 days to decide on a resolution about whether President Yar'Adua "is incapable of discharging the functions of his office". In a nationwide address in February 2010, Jonathan called on all Nigerians to set aside religious and ethnic differences to work together for the common good. Jonathan said "The events of the recent past have put to a test our collective resolve as a democratic nation," "I am delighted to know that our nation has demonstrated resilience and unity of purpose.[3]

On 9 February 2010, the Senate determined that presidential power should be transmitted to the Vice President. He was appointed to serve as Acting President, with all the accompanying powers, until when and if Yar'Adua returned to full health. The power transfer was called a "coup without the word" by opposition lawyers and lawmakers.[13] The Nigerian Constitution requires a written letter from the President stating he is unable to serve or that the cabinet sends a medical team to examine him but this provision has not apparently been fulfilled leaving some doubts as to the constitutionality of the action.[14]
[edit] Presidency

Yar'Adua died on 5 May 2010. Jonathan was sworn in as Yar'Adua's replacement on 6 May 2010,[15] becoming Nigeria's 14th Head of State. He will serve as President until the next election. Upon taking office, Jonathan cited anti-corruption, power and electoral reform as likely focuses of his administration.[16] He stated that he came to office under "very sad and unusual circumstances."[17]

On 18 May 2010, the National Assembly approved President Goodluck Jonathan's nomination of former Kaduna State governor, Namadi Sambo, an architect, for the position of Vice President.[18][19]
[edit] World Cup controversy

After the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, in which the Nigerian side failed to advance beyond group stage, Jonathan decreed a ban on international games for the football team. FIFA objected to the president's decision and threatened to evict Nigeria from the association. Subsequently Jonathan lifted the ban.[20]

Liyel Imoke

Liyel Imoke (born 10 July 1961) was elected governor of Cross River State in Nigeria in April 2007, taking office on 29 May 2007. He is a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP).[1]

[edit] Background

Liyel Imoke's family was from the Babumono tribe of Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State.[2] His father, Dr. Samuel Imoke was a medical doctor who became a cabinet minister and leader of Parliament in the former Eastern Region. Liyel Imoke was born on 10 July 1961 at Ibadan in the then Western Region of Nigeria.[1]

Liyel Imoke attended Mary Knoll College, Okuku, Ogoja and then the Federal Government College, Enugu (1973–1977) for his secondary education. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Economics at the University of Maryland in the United States in 1982. He then studied Law at the University of Buckingham, England, gaining an LLB degree in 1985, and then studied at the American University in Washington, D.C. where he gained a Master degree in Law. He completed his legal education at the Nigeria Law School, Lagos, in 1988.[1] Liyel Imoke practiced law in Washington, D. C. and Lagos between 1982 and 1992. He was principal partner of Liyel Imoke and Co., Lagos.[3]
[edit] Early political career

In 1992, Liyel Imoke was elected a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria at the age of 30 during the Ibrahim Babangida transition government. His term ended with the dissolution of the government in November 1993 by the military regime headed by General Sani Abacha[1]

Between 1993 and 1999, he was a Managing Consultant at Telsat Communications, Lagos; Executive Chairman of Value Mart Nigeria, Lagos, and Executive Director of Trident Petroleum and Gas, Lagos.[3]

In 1999, he was appointed a Special Adviser on Public Utilities by President Olusegun Obasanjo. He was Executive Chairman of the Special Board charged with winding down the Oil Minerals Producing Areas Development Commission.[1] He was Chairman of Technical Board of the National Electric Power Authority.[4]
[edit] Minister of Power and Steel

In July 2003, Liyel Imoke was appointed Federal Minister of Power and Steel, and for a while was also Federal Minister of Education. Imoke implemented reforms laid out in the Nigerian Power Sector Reform Act of 2005, leading to establishment of the Nigerian Energy Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the unbundling of the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA).[1]

In 2008, the House of Representatives set up a panel to look into how $16 billion for the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) was disbursed, asking for testimony by Liyel Imoke and Olusegun Agagu, who had also served as Minister of Power and Steel. The panel cleared Imoke of wrongdoing.[5] In July 2008 the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said that Liyel Imoke was under investigation. Imoke had lost his constitutional immunity after his election as governor of Cross River state had been annulled.[6]

In April 2007, Liyel Imoke successfully ran for governor of Cross River State on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform. He took office on 29 May, 2007. The election was annulled by an Election Appeal Tribunal in July 2008. He was elected again in a re-run on 23 August 2008.[7]

Donald Duke

Donald Duke (born 30 September 1961 in Calabar) was the Governor of Cross River State, Nigeria from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007. He has been at the helm of affairs of the State since the commencement of the present democratic dispensation in Nigeria. He received LLB degree in 1982 from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria - Nigeria, the B.L in 1983 from the Nigerian Law School, Lagos and the L.L.M. in Business Law and Admiralty in 1984 from University of Pennsylvania.[1]

Calabar (also referred to as Callabar, Calabari, Calbari, Kalabari and Kalabar)[1] is a city in Cross River State, southeastern Nigeria. The original Efik name for Calabar was Atakpa.[2] City is watered by the Calabar River and Great Qua Rivers and creeks of the Cross River (from its inland delta). Calabar is the capital of Cross River State and has an estimated population of 1.2 million residents.[citation needed]

Spearheading the incumbent debt of Nigeria, Duke pushed for democracy and against military control. He stated; "What got the military out of power was not democracy but the dreadful state of the economy. If we, the democratic government, cannot deliver food for the mass of people we can forget about democracy."[2]

Duke has been praised for his contributions to the fields of agriculture, urban development, government, environment, information and communication, investment drive, and tourism. Through his work Calabar is seen as the "cleanest city in Nigeria."[citation needed]

He created the idea of the Obudu Ranch International Mountain Race and the race grew to become one of the most lucrative mountain running competitions in the world under his stewardship.[3][4]

The BBC reported in September 2006 that Governor Duke was the only governor specifically mentioned as not being under investigation by the federal Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Four other governors were also reported as not under investigation but their names were not released.)[5]

Donald Duke announced that he would run for president in the 2007 presidential election, but stepped aside in favour of the eventual winner, Umaru Yar'Adua.

PROTOCOL

News > >ADDRESS BY THE HONOURABLE CHAIRMAN, INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION (INEC) AT THE CONSULTATION BETWEEN INEC AND THE NATIONAL LEADERSHIP OF NIGERIAN POLITICAL PARTIES HELD ON TUESDAY, 21ST SEPTEMBER, 2010

PROTOCOL

It gives me immense pleasure to welcome all of us to this second interactive meeting in as many months. You would recall that during our first meeting on 18th August, 2010, I promised that as principal stakeholders in the electoral process, political parties would be regularly consulted by INEC. This meeting is meant to both fulfil that promise and to discuss some issues that are central to the success of the unfolding electoral calendar and the roles of political parties and INEC in it.

Since our last meeting, the Electoral Act 2010 has been signed into law and gazetted, which resolves one of the central impediments to our preparations for both the registration of voters and 2011 elections, as I mentioned at that meeting. On our part, we have released the election timetable and continued at breakneck speed to prepare for voter registration exercise and the elections proper. In the one month since our meeting, in addition to releasing the election timetable, we have set a clear and targeted agenda with a detailed inter-Departmental operational plan that will guide our activities up to the elections in January 2011: we are now on the verge of signing the contracts for procurement of the equipment required for the registration exercise; we have met with and received the buy-in of numerous stakeholders; we are nearing the finalization of an MOU with civil society organizations; we have commenced the recruitment of over 360,000 staff required for the voter registration, and; we have fully developed a new registration software that is completely owned by INEC, which is currently being rigorously tested.

Following the release of the election timetable, the Commission has received repeated inquiries expressing concerns about the ability of political parties to comply with the timelines of the calendar in the context of the new Electoral Act 2010. Principal among the worries is the new format for the nomination of candidates, which is much more decentralized and extended than before, thus requiring a longer timeframe to be actualized. Apart from the political parties, government officials, our development partners, the mass media and the wider public have also wondered about the ability of INEC to deliver a fresh Voters’ Register for the 2011 elections and to conduct the elections proper within the timeframe established by the Constitution and the Electoral Act 2010. Surely, INEC is not oblivious of these legitimate concerns, which reflect the collective will of Nigerians and the friends of the country to ensure that we get the next election right.

Yet, these time constraints were not unanticipated by the Commission. You may recall that in my very first Press Conference as Chairman of the Commission, I clearly stated that the two constraints facing the Commission, having decided to conduct a voter registration exercise from scratch, were time and availability of funds. I therefore alerted Nigerians that our ability to deliver a new Voters’ Register, which is the bedrock of free, fair and credible elections, depended largely on meeting certain timelines. Among these were award of contract for the acquisition of the DDC machines early in August, delivery of the first 15,000 units of the machines early in September and training of registration officers by early to middle of September. It has since become clear that we have missed some of these timelines. Fortunately, the problem of finance has now been largely solved, with the supplementary appropriation and agreement with the Federal Ministry of Finance on a schedule of releases of funds, which, I am very happy to note, the Ministry is commendably adhering to.

However, the nagging problem of time endures. It is important to put this constraint of time in perspective, considering the diverse interpretations it has received in the press over the last few weeks. The fact that we have time constraints does not mean that the tasks at hand are impossible to accomplish within the existing timeframe. Instead, what it means is that there is a very limited margin to make modifications to timelines, particularly for critical deliverables. For instance, if for any reason it would take five weeks instead of the estimated four to deliver all the DDC machines needed, that would totally put the registration exercise in jeopardy. And the more we miss the timelines, the more difficult it becomes to adjust. Still, as a Commission, we have repeatedly insisted that we shall work within the existing legal framework as contained in the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and the Electoral Act 2010. We have also consistently said that the more time we have, the better the outcome of both the registration of voters and the 2011 elections. These positions are informed by at least two considerations:

1. It is not the Constitutional responsibility of INEC to establish or change the legal framework, including timelines, for electoral activities. Consequently, to canvass the change in the legal framework or Constitutional provisions on election dates would not only be inappropriate, but could open the Commission to public suspicion, given the well known recent electoral history of Nigeria.

2. The question of fixing and changing election dates has been one of the major sore points of our electoral experience in Nigeria. The degree of partisanship that usually informs discussions of these issues is legendary. Consequently, we decided as a Commission that direct involvement in such debates could undermine the independence of INEC in the public eyes, and we deliberately chose to keep away from it.

Yet, we fully understand the position within the relevant arms of government that INEC is in the best position to indicate if it needs more time to carry out its Constitutional roles effectively. Certainly, he who wears the shoe should know exactly where it pinches and what is worth doing is, indeed, worth doing well. The foregoing aptly captures the dilemma that the Commission has been grappling with in the past few weeks namely, that while it is true that we require more time, we must consistently act within the law and also insulate the Commission from the partisan politics that is bound to trail any demand for time extension.

At a Retreat of National Commissioners and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) of INEC in Calabar from September 16 – 19, 2010, these issues were exhaustively discussed, weighing all the implications for the Commission, the electoral process and the Nigerian people. The Retreat clearly noted that while the Constitution and Electoral Act must remain sacrosanct, there is no point in delivering an electoral process the outcome of which will again be controversial and incredible. At the end, it was concluded that:

Having examined the Commission’s detailed Action Plan for the voter registration and elections, the Retreat noted that the timeline for the implementation of this Plan is very tight. Consequently, the Commission shall endeavour to engage all the relevant stakeholders with a view to exploring all legal avenues for extension of the time to enable the Commission deliver on the aspirations of Nigerians for credible voters’ register and free, fair and credible elections. Should this happen, May 29 2011 inauguration date must remain sacrosanct.

There is no doubt that political parties constitute the most critical stakeholders in this regard and that is why this meeting is taking place two days after the retreat. I hope that this meeting will closely interrogate the existing situation regarding the election calendar and make recommendations to relevant bodies. I also hope that we can reach a consensus on these issues and avoid divisive positioning. We are sharing with you the detailed work plan of the Commission for the registration of voters and elections, which particularly convinced our Retreat to seek ways of extending the time available to the Commission. Our expectation is that you will profoundly critique the plan, paying necessary attention to its operability within the subsisting timeframe.

Finally, let me state clearly that the reason the Commission decided to be upfront with the Nigerian people about the Herculean challenges confronting it was an abiding commitment to ensuring their ownership of whatever the Commission is doing. We have always insisted that our actions will be transparent and that we shall always seek the understanding and support of Nigerians in difficult times. Surely, this is one of such times.

I thank you all for coming and wish us all fruitful deliberations.
