“For this edition of 21 Days of Y’ello Care, we are again going all out to put smiles on faces and make a difference in the lives of many people,” Goodluck said.

The programme kicks off on 1 June, with the CEO, Mr. Ahmad Farroukh leading MTN staff to plant flowers and trees, among other activities slated for the company premises in Ikoyi, Lagos. It will be rounded off with football tournaments in Lagos and other regions on 21 June.

According to Mr. Goodluck, 21 Days of Y’ello Care is consistent with MTN’s commitment to contributing to the socio-economic well being of its host communities.

MTN Rewards Unsung Heroes on Millionaire Show

MTN, Nigeria’s leading telecommunications company, recently reaffirmed its leadership position in the area of corporate social investment when it rewarded five patriotic Nigerians on a special edition of its popular TV game show, “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire”. The special edition of the show tagged “Who Deserves To Be A Millionaire” was conceived to reward heroes who have made positive impact towards the development of the country without receiving any significant recognition from the society. The unsung heroes honoured at the show were Apostle Moses Olaiya, a renowned actor popularly known as Baba Sala who won 1million Naira; Usman Baba Pategi, a leading humour merchant popularly known as Samanja who won half a million Naira, and Rita Ofili, a physically challenged final year student of Linguistics at the University of Lagos, who also smiled home with half a million Naira. Others were Samuel Odubote aka Teddy Odus, a veteran boxer and boxing coach of international repute who won half a million Naira and Rabiu Sulaiman, a physically challenged traffic control volunteer in Agege, Lagos State who won 1million Naira. Speaking on the motive behind this gesture, Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer, MTN Nigeria, Mr Bola Akingbade, explained that the special edition was in line with the company’s corporate values. According to him, “Enriching peoples’ lives is one of the core objectives of this activation. It is in this light that we are dedicating this special edition to these honourees whose life style depicts integrity, patriotism, selflessness and courage.” The show which was characterised by suspense, anxiety and the unpredictable nature of the host, Frank Edoho, was further enriched by the presence of top celebrities who took their turn on the hot seat to win cash prizes for the honourees. The duo of Kunle Bamtefa and Ngozi Nwosu of the popular TV programme Fuji House of Commotion supported Pategi (Samanja), while popular comedian, Teju Baby Face and TV icon, Iretiola Doyle, backed Baba Sala. Speaking shortly after the show, Baba Sala commended MTN for the gesture describing it as the first of its kind by any corporate organisation. “I am overwhelmed by this gesture shown to me by MTN. I also wish to commend the company for taking the initiative to organise this special edition because I believe it will encourage Nigerians to be more patriotic.” He said his winnings will be invested in a small business to sustain him while in retirement. Who Deserves To Be A Millionaire was first introduced last year. National heroes such as Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, who designed the Nigerian national flag; Peter Fregene, the longest serving goalkeeper in the Nigerian national football team and Davis Offor (Clarus of the popular Masquerade TV series), were recognised in the inaugural edition.

Valdez Confident Of 2010 Place

August 18, 2009

Paraguayan international Nelson Valdez is confident his side will book their place at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, despite some recent slip-ups in South American qualifying.

The Paraguayans were the early pace-setters in the table, beating Brazil (2-0) and claiming a credible draw against Argentina (1-1), but have not won in their last four matches, a run that includes three defeats and a draw.

The side are still well placed in third in the table, four points above fifth-placed Ecuador, with home matches against Bolivia, Colombia and Argentina to come, as well as an away trip to Venezuela.

“We still have four games to go and three of those are at home. I'm sure we'll finish at least fourth so qualification shouldn't be a problem,” Valdez told Fifa.com, before adding that the home ties against Bolivia (September 5) and Argentina (September 8) will be “like cup finals”.

Should Paraguay slip to fifth at the end of qualifying, they will have another chance to book their place in South Africa with a two-legged play-off tie against the fourth-placed side on the North, Central America and Caribbean table.
