Ikuru's Wife Urges Women to Speak Against Harmful Tradition

Wife of the Rivers State Deputy Governor, Dr Mina Ikuru, has called on women to speak up against harmful traditional practices that endanger their health and wellbeing. Dr Ikuru made this call Friday while delivering a lecture titled "Nutrition and Health" at the 65th Annual Conference of the Good Women Association of the Christ Apostolic Church with the theme "Obedience: The Key to Successful Womanhood" in Port Harcourt.

Regretting that women are more affected by societal ills and health problems, she urged them to dwell on God's word which as she put it, "is spiritual food and a defence against evil" and be role models in their families and the society. She reiterated the need for good nutrition, saying it is the secret of longevity and warned against malnutrition which according to her "can cause infertility and negatively affect the baby's growth and development".

The Deputy Governor's wife, also lamented the difficulties experienced by women during menopause and urged them to be close to God and trust the challenges they face in their lives to His care. Speaking to newsmen shortly after the lecture, National Secretary of Good Women Association of the Christ Apostolic Church, who represented the National Leader, Deaconess D.O. Adebule, expressed delight on the success of the conference and hoped the event would impact positively on families in the State.

Also speaking, Coordinator of the association in Rivers and Bayelsa States, Pastor Samuel Ogbomode, enjoined the women to contribute to the peace and development of the State and advised the youths to deviate from negative tendencies that undermine their future.

Amaechi Asks Chritians to Pray for State

Rivers State Governor Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has again called for continuous prayers from Christians for the successful governance of the state. Governor Amaechi made the call when the Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission, (TREM), Bishop Mike Okonkwo, paid him a courtesy visit at Government House in Port Harcourt.

The Governor, who said he was always happy when men of God visit him because of their prayers for the state, said he believes that their prayers attract the mercies of God which bring about success and protection. The State Chief Executive, attributed his emergence as governor to the handiwork of God, remarking that one reason why God put him in office was to prove that no man can be God.

He, therefore, urged all those who know him and all Christians to lift him and his government to God, promising that by the grace of God he would not disappoint God and the people of the state He has given him to govern. The Governor, however, emphasized the need for prayers, pointing out that there are benefits which man cannot derive out of his own efforts but by the mercies of God.

Earlier, the Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Bishop Mike Okonkwo, said they were in Rivers State on an Apostolic visit. He said the church would continue to partner with Government in its quest to reach the people at the grassroots and pledged to pray for the State Government and the people of the Niger Delta to enable them overcome some of the challenges facing the region
